Slab & Wall Modelling (Revit)

Continues to the blogger of CBWD, I would like to share more detail about the slab and wall opening modelling and the usage of this model and detail workflow. This model can large help for construction cost, mep coordination and building progress.

Workflow of creating slab and wall opening model
1. Create door opening, Louvre opening and Acess opening
Create architectural opening base on preliminary architectural model automatically .
2. Create MEP Opening
Create MEP opening base preliminary MEP model automatically. Magical is one of the rebut addin to create MEP opening base routing and wall
3. Update opening base on CBWD needs
Update the opening manually base on the comments on CBWD. This stage may need large manually works.
4. Lock the frozen opening
After the CBWD is approved and available for construction, lock the related opening. This stage is to confirm the opening model match site construction .

Usage of Slab and wall opening model
1. Benefits for future MEP rearrangements
While the opening model is match with site and will not suddenly removed or relocated, the MEP engineers can use the opening model for their future coordination. MEP rearrangement is very common in a design and build project. With the opening model, MEP engineer can more easy to find the way to reroute the pipe system or duct system by using existing opening.
2. QS patyroll for opening refill contractor
In the past, the price of opening refill works is hard to estimate because QS do not know the exact number of opening. For Building engineer, they need to spend lots of time to count the number by reviewing tons of drawings.With the opening, we can generate a schedule of opening and the size, purposes of the openings.

Tips and recommendations
1. After the approval of the CBWD drawings, there are two concepts will affect the opening models.. They are DAms and RBW. DAms means the opening in approval drawing is relocated and resubmitted the drawing for approval. However, hand draft and sketch always occurs so they may not reflect into the opening model. For this kind of DAMs, we can’t well manage. Therefore, a backup of opening model for approval CBWD drawing is important and update the Dams opening in to live model if possible. RBW means request builder words. It not only relate to opening but also all the additional builder works such as defect, drilling works, etc. In this part, RBW is another addition cost which hard to estimate. If possible, record all the RBW dams opening can also help for QS payroll and manage the unreasonable RBW.

2. Separate opening under different CBWD Submissions
Create several Worksets to store openings and frozen the workset while the CBWD is approved. It Also, it benefit for multiple workers while different people may responsible for different workplace of CBWD.

Expression
In my project, I have not good use for wall and slab opening. The reason is the MEP model is nit under my control. It is control by another company and do not put efforts on the opening model. So the poor situation make the opening not match with site which is unsuitable and unreliable for the usages above. Therefore, I strongly hope this blogger can attend me to improve in my future project.

Model Change Analysis (Dynamo)

In a design and build project, model change monitoring is a big topic which will affect the whole construction and design life. A good monitoring of the model change  can effectively find out the potential issues of the change and trase the issues directly and immediately. In this blogger, I will like to share the method to monitor the model change of structure model whcih already successfully used in my project. Then, I will share some possible method to monitoring the model change of architecture model and MEP model and the difficulties in my project. Ready previous structure model and current model In my project, we will compare the model bi-weekly. So first I will prepare the structure model in last bi-weekly and model in current bi-weekly. Create Automation to extract the geometry data In my project, I use dynamo to extract XYZ location and size of beam, column, slab and bearing wall of both previous and current model.

Headroom Analysis (Solibri)

  In AEC world, there is several laws and rules to control the building design, structure design and MEP design. Headroom is one of the common rule that control the emergency routes or the car parking routes of the building. In this blogger, I would like to share and useful tools which can check the headroom of building refer to the model.
